중동여성평화회의(MEW)

중동여성평화회의(Women’s Conference for Peace in the Middle East)는
중동 및 북아프리카 지역의 평화 솔루션을 모색하는 연례 회의입니다.

세계평화여성연합의 초청으로 1997년 중동 각국의 영향력 있는 여성 지도자들이 터키 이스탄불에 모였습니다. 이것은 중동 평화를 위한 최초의 여성 회의였습니다.

중동여성평화회의는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인, 키프로스(그리스, 터키), 쿠웨이트와 이라크 등 분쟁, 분리, 정복의 역사가 있는 국가의 참가자들이 한 테이블에 앉아 솔직한 대화를 나누는 장입니다. 정치, 역사적인 상황으로 불화를 항상 피할 수는 없지만, 그러나 어떤 경우에도 불구하고 이 회의의 결과는 분노를 넘어 상호 이해의 방향으로 진행됩니다.
참석자들은 자국의 정치적 상황으로 결코 만날 수 없었을 여성들을 만나 대화를 통해 서로의 상황을 이해하고 용서하며 우호적인 동맹을 맺습니다.

회의에서 다루어진 내용은 권장 사항으로 제안하여 참석자들의 투표를 통해 정식 제안서를 결정합니다. 이후 참여한 여성 지도자들은 제안서를 해당 국가의 정부 기관에 배포합니다.
유엔은 이 회담에 여러 명의 대표를 파견하는 등 관심을 보였고, 논의 내용은 다시 유엔에 보고됩니다.

중동여성평화회의가 21년간 계속되었다는 사실은 이 청사진이 시대의 요구에 진정으로 부응하고 있음을 보여줍니다.
