제16차 중동여성평화회의가 6월 26일부터 29일까지 스위스, 제네바 UN본부에서 개최되었다.

유엔 인권위원회(UN Human Rights Committee)의 연례행사로 ‘재난과 갈등으로 영향 받은 아이들: 예방, 보호, 치료와 역량강화 ’라는 주제로 개최된 는 중동 및 북아프리카, 유럽 등 18개국에서 180명의 여성지도자들이 참석하였으며, 한국에서는 문난영 회장과 최연아 부회장, 이사 브라질 나오꼬 국제국장이 참석하였다.

또한 이번 회의에는 ‘유엔 인권이사회’의 라우라 라세르 회장을 비롯하여 유니세프의 메코믹 대변인, 국제 적십자사 비크만 대표, 유네스코, 유엔개발계획, 국제노동기구 임원 등 다수의 유엔 관계자들과 제네바 주재 카나다, 케냐, 우루과이, 필리핀대사 등 8명의 대사들과 미국, 스페인, 중국, 브라질, 노르웨이 영사를 포함하여 16명의 각국 영사들 그리고 25개 국제 NGO대표들이 참석하였다.

올해로 16차를 맞이하는 중동여성평화회의는 참석한 지도자들이 각기 자기나라에 돌아가 회의에서 결의된 내용들을 현장 활동으로 실천하면서 중동지역 여성평화운동의 든든한 기반이 되고 있다.

‘유엔 인권이사회’ 라우라 라세르 회장은 지금 중동 지역 및 전 세계에서 벌어지고 있는 많은 인권문제들을 해결하기에는 유엔의 재정 및 열악한 인력, 기술 등 제반 여건 부족에 대한 아쉬움을 토로하였다. 또한 여성연합과 같은 세계적인 NGO가 열심히 활동하는데 대해 감사를 전하며 앞으로도 계속 함께 협력해 나가자고 하였다.

이에 여성연합은 유엔본부와 훌륭한 파트너십을 이루며 지구촌 곳곳에서의 어머니의 사랑으로 꾸준히 활동 할 것이라고 전했다.

The 16th Women’s Conference for Peace in the Middle East hosted

The 16th Women’s Conference for Peace in the Middle East was held from June 26 to 29 at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The theme for this 16th conference was ‘Children affected by conflict and disaster: prevention, protection, healing and empowerment.’ This year, two sessions of the MEW were held as side events of the UN Human Rights Council, attended by about 180 women leaders from 18 nations in the Middle East, North, Africa and Europe. From Korea, President Lan Young Moon, Vice President Yeon Ah Choi, and International Department Aide Naoko Isa Brazil attended the conference.

In addition, the conference was also attended by a number of UN personnel including President Laura Dupuy-Lasserre of the UN Human Rights Council, UNICEF spokesperson McCormick, Representative Vikman of the International Committee of the Red Cross, officials from UNESCO, UNDP, and the International Labor Organization, as well as 8 ambassadors to Geneva from Canada, Kenya, Uruguay, and the Philippines among other nations, 16 consuls from countries  including the USA, Spain, China, Brazil, and Norway, and representatives of 25 international NGOs.

The Women’s Conference for Peace in the Middle East, held for the 16th time this year, is serving as a solid foundation for the women’s peace movement in the Middle East because the leaders who participate in the conference return to their respective nations and put into practice what is  pledged  each year.

President Dupuy-Lasserre of the UN Human Rights Council expressed her regret for the fact that the overall conditions of the UN, such as the lack of finances, human resources, and technology, are insufficient for resolving the many human rights problems arising in the Middle East region and the rest of the world today.  She said that she was grateful for the active work of such international NGOs as the WFWP and that she hoped that the NGOs will continue to cooperate with one another.

In response, WFWP representatives stated that they will continue to maintain the wonderful partnership between the Federation and the UN Headquarters and to carry out activities in various parts of the global village with maternal love.
