2012년 4월 30일부터 5월 6일까지 외무부와 사이프러스 정교회의 후원으로 중동 사이프러스 여성연합과 의사로 구성된 의료봉사단의 협조로 26명의 리비아 청소년들이 사이프러스를 방문했다.

세계평화여성연합의 리비아 어린이 프로젝트는 2003년과 2004년에 있던 가자지구 어린이 방문에 이어 4번째였다.

리비아 방문단은 11세 부터 16세의 청소년 (남학생 23명, 여학생 3명)으로 구성되었다. 참석 학생들은 리비아의 각 지역에서  모였으며-일부는 상황이 좋지 않은 도시인 미스라타와 시르트에서 왔다-함께 모인 어린이들은 서로 잘 몰랐고, 일부는 태어나서 처음으로 집을 떠나 비행기를 타보는 학생들이었다. 

참석한 학생들은 5명의 안내원들과 동행했는데 안내원들 중에 한 명은 전 주 사이프러스 리비아대사관 대리대사를 역임했고 최근에는 리비아 외무부 사이프러스 담당 무관으로 일하고 있는 분도 계셨다.

모든 유관기관들은 금번 방문과 관련하여 최선을 다해 신경 써 주었고 학생들을 따듯하게 반겨주었다.

학생들은 여태껏 접해보지 못했던 음식들을 먹고, 춤과 노래도 부르고, 볼링게임도하고, 박람회장과 동물원 그리고 고고학 유적지도 관람할 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있었다. 그러나 무엇보다도 가중 중요했던 것은 굉장히 충격이 컸던 전쟁의 경험으로부터 정서적 치유를 위한 첫 단계였던 치유전문가와의 만남이었다.

외무부에서는 보건소와 함께 과정을 준비하였고, 이중에 가장 유익했던 것은 강사가 아이들을 칭찬해주면 진행했던 4시간짜리 드라마 세션이었다.

결론적으로, 아이들은 단순히 우리들과 즐거운 시간만을 보낸 것은 아니라 공격적인 성향도 없어지고, 차분해지고, 규칙적으로 변했고 아이들의 마음속에는 평화로운 미래에 대한 희망으로 가득 채워졌다.

이번 경험은 아이들에게 만이 아니라 아이들을 안내하면서 리비아의 새로운 시작을 위해 헌신적으로 봉사활동을 하며 아이들에게 희망을 주는 서로 다른 국가에서 온 봉사자들을 본 안내원들에게도 정말 값진 경험이었다.

우리에게도 이번 경험은 마음속 깊이 영원히 남아질 것이고 우리가 얼마나 행운이고 복 받은 것인지 그리고 평화라는 것이 단순이 원한다고 이루어지는 것이 아닌 우리 스스로가 만들어야 하고 타인을 위한 희생하는 삶이 필요하다는 것을 알게 해 주었다.

LIBYAN CHILDREN’S VISIT TO CYPRUS

From the 30th of April to the 6th of May 2012, 26 Libyan children visited Cyprus sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, with the significant contribution of WFWP and the Volunteer Doctors – Cyprus.

This project was following the successful visit of 23 Japanese children, victims of the great earthquake in Japan, from the 24th of December 2011 to the 6th of January 2012. That project too was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Orthodox Church of Cyprus and the Volunteer Doctors – Cyprus, while WFWP was then instrumental in bringing the children from Japan and escorting them throughout their trip.

For WFWP the Libyan children would be the 4th such project, following two visits for a week of children from Gaza, in 2003 and 2004.

The Libyan group consisted of 23 boys and 3 girls, aged between 11 and 16. They came from the 4 corners of Libya, (quite a few from Misrata and Sirt; the worst hit cities), they did not know each other, they did not know the persons accompanying them, and for most, if not all, it was their first time in a plane, away from their families.

They were accompanied by 5 escorts, one of whom,  was an ex chargé d’affaires  at the Libyan embassy in Cyprus, and currently the attaché in charge of the Cyprus desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Libya.

All the parties involved in this visit did their best to take care of the children and to surround them with warmth and love.

The children had the opportunity to visit archaeological sights, a zoo, a fairground, play bowling, sing and dance, have their faces painted, taste foods they have never had before, but most importantly to encounter specialists who greatly contributed to a first step of emotional healing from their devastating experiences of war. The Ministry had organised a session with its Health Services, but most beneficial was a drama session they had with an instructor of drama in education, who offered to give his 4-hr workshop with his compliments. 

In the end, these children had not only spent a very happy week with us here, but they were going back, transformed, not aggressive, not loud, not unruly but full of hope for a peaceful future.

It was an experience beneficial, not only for the children, also for their escorts who saw people of a different country working selflessly to give them hope for a new beginning in Libya.

For us too, such experiences stay embedded in our mind forever and make us realise even more how lucky and blessed we are and how much peace is not something we should just wish for, but something we make, something we give away for the sake of our fellow men.
