영국 여성연합의 프로젝트인 이 제8주년을 맞이하여 3월27일 다문화 지역사회 센터에서 기념식을 가졌다.

왓퍼드의 기독교와 이슬람 지역 사회 사람들을 초대하여 두 지역사회 간의 이해와 친선 도모를 위한 자매결연 및 기념식을 해 온 지 어느 덧 8년이 된 이 번 행사에는 40여명의 다양한(파키스탄, 말레이시아, 일본, 유럽, 동유럽, 영국, 아프리카 카리브해 등 )인종의 지역 주민들이 참여하였으며 이라는 주제로 토의를 하였다.

이날에는 기념식은 왓퍼드 평화결연 활동 보고, 미티 토마 회장(영국 여성연합)의 3월 초 상원 의사당에서 개최된 보고, 오늘날 세계 여성의 지위와 여권 향상의 필요성에 관한 초청강연, 필리스 체이스 회원의 축가로 이어졌다.

퇴직교사 겸 청소년 문제 가정문제 관련 사회복지사인 기조연설 자다비씨의 급한 사정으로

크리스타 레니 회원이 ‘여성, 어머니, 그리고 가정’ 이라는 주제 연설문을 대독하였으며, 강연문에서는 “여성들이 지역사회의 문제 해결을 위해 앞장서서 적극적으로 참여하기를 소원한다. 또한 세계 인구의 반이 여성이라는 것을 생각하면서, 지금이 바로 우리 여성이 가진 강점을 가지고 우리 사회 문제를 다루고 해결해 나아가야 할 적절한 때이다.”라고 전했다.

또한 치카코 레이너리 회원과 함께 일본의 지진과 쓰나미로 고통 받는 사람들을 위해 평화를 기원하는 의미에서 종이학을 접어 나누어 주었고, 이 날 스코틀랜드 여성연합이 출간한 요리책을 판매하여 나온 80유로의 수익금을 일본 적십자에 기증하기로 하였다.

이날 참석자들 모두에게 5월 30일 뱅크 홀리데이에서 개최 될 2011년 왓퍼드 기념행사에 있을 평화의 결연 기념식에 참여하도록 초대하였다.

WFWP UK - The Watford Bridge of Peace celebrates its 8th Anniversary

On Sunday 27 March the Watford Bridge of Peace, a project of the WFWP celebrated its eighth anniversary at the Multi-Cultural Community Center in Watford. It has been eight years since women from Christian and Muslim communities in Watford were invited to participate in a sisterhood ceremony to promote understanding and friendship.

Some 40 ladies from the various Watford communities including Pakistani, Malaysian, Japanese, European and Eastern European, British, African Caribbean and others came together and discussed a common topic of interest and significance: "Women, Mother and Family." After a short Powerpoint presentation about the Watford Bridge of Peace's activities, Mrs. Mitty Tohma, president of the WFWP UK, reported on the meeting that took place at the House of Lords in early March, commemorating the centenary anniversary of Women's International Day. Eminent speakers had given presentations on the status of women today and the need to improve women's human rights all over the world. Our Peace sister Phyllis Chase delighted us with some beautiful songs. Unfortunately due to an emergency, our main speaker Ms. June Darby, could not be with us and Ms. Christa Rennie conveyed her written speech. Ms. Darby is a retired teacher and social worker involved in youth delinquency and family issues. She spoke about "Women, Mother and Family" emphasizing the value of the family and the significant role of the mother. She also mentioned her wish for more women to come forward and offer their contributions in resolving issues in our society. "Men have been mostly dominating world affairs until today. Considering that women count for half of the world's population, isn't it appropriate and time for women today to offer their feminine qualities in dealing and working out our society's problems?"

After a short break for refreshments, the ladies discussed in small groups the topic of the afternoon. Mrs. Chikako Raineri gave an appeal for those who suffered from the earthquake tsunami in Japan stressing the power of prayer in alleviating the suffering of the victims. Chikako gave an origami crane to everyone to remind us to think and pray for Japan. We sold recipe books published by our WFWP sisters in Scotland and raised £80.00 which will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross.

We invited everyone to participate in the Watford Celebration 2011 on 30 May and support the Bridge of Peace ceremony that day.
