2013년 12월 7일 여성연합 메릴랜드 지부는 다민족학생교육사무소(OMSE)로부터 메릴랜드 대학 ‘제9회 파우와우(Powwow:인디언어, 집회라는 뜻)’의 공동 주최자로 초청을 받아 ‘평화의 다리’ 행사를 주관하였다. OMSE의 부국장이자 파우와우의 의장인 도티 치퀠로씨는 지난 10월 ‘제21회 미국 여성연합 총회’에 참석하여 ‘평화의 다리’의 중요성을 깨닫고 지난 진주만과 미국 내 원주민과의 전쟁의 상처를 치유하고 화해하자는 취지에 이번 행사에 치르게 되었다.

먼저 앙겔리카 셀레 미국회장이 ‘평화의 다리’의 역사와 의미에 대해 설명하였고 이어서 9명의 일본여성들이 축가로 ‘손에 손 잡고’를 불렀다.

일본후손들과 미국의 전쟁 참전용사들, 원주민들 총 6쌍이 ‘평화의 다리’를 통해 결연을 하였다. 자신들의 문화를 상징하는 선물을 교환하고 화해의 포옹을 하였다. 평화의 다리를 건넘으로써 서로를 이해하고 이제는 참된 형제자매가 되자는 희망을 품었다.

자매결연식이 끝난 후, 의미 깊은 행사를 치룰 수 있게 도와준 OMSE의 국장인 레스터(Christopher Lester)박사에게 선물과 도티 부국장에게 공로패를 증정하는 시간을 가졌다.

이 날 행사는 지역 신문사인 센티넬(The Sentinel)에 개제되었다.

USA-Maryland, Bridge of Peace Ceremony at the 9th Annual POWWOW at UMD

On December 7, WFWP Maryland was invited by the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE) to conduct a Bridge of Peace Ceremony and to be a co-sponsor of the 9th Annual Powwow at the University of Maryland.

Mrs. Dottie Chicquelo, an assistant director of the OMSE, attended the 21st National Assembly in October and felt so inspired by the Bridge of Peace ceremony that she made it possible for the WFWP to hold the same ceremony there. The ceremony was intended to reconcile former enemies of wars.

Mrs. Angelika Selle, WFWP USA President, opened the ceremony with an explanation of the history of the Bridge of Peace, followed by the nine-member Japanese Women’s Choir, who moved the audience by singing, 'Hand in Hand.'

Six pairs crossed the bridge, bringing together those of Japanese heritage, American veterans of wars and Native Americans, many of whom were veterans. They exchanged gifts symbolizing their respective cultures, embraced each other on the bridge and walked through the arch, which symbolized their hope to build a strong relationship based on their desire to understand and respect each other and to grow to become true friends and brothers and sisters.

In preparation, on the morning of the event, the participants in the Bridge ceremony had the opportunity to share their hearts and forgive each other.

WFWP presented a gift to Dr. Christopher Lester, director of the OMSE and gave a special commemorative plaque to Mrs. Dottie Chicquelo.
